What is video streaming?

Video streaming is the delivery of video and audio over the web. Video files are accessed via a link on a web page. Playback is through an ordinary PC or laptop computer without videotapes or DVDs etc. Video resources are provided 'on demand' without the need for lengthy downloads.

Who can access the video?

Any student, faculty or staff with a network connection can view video files. Access is usually not restricted unless otherwise requested. Further restrictions can be applied if necessary.

What format of video is used?

UT Dallas Video Services uses Windows Media for delivery of video and audio files.

What do I need to access video streams?

Video streams will work on most computers. To play the video you'll need:

  • Current computer with speakers or headphones
  • PC users - Windows Media Player. This is available free of charge from the Windows Media download site.
  • Mac users - a wmv compatible player e.g. the VLC player

Where can I use it?

Video files can be viewed wherever there is a network connection - in computer labs, lecture halls and teaching spaces.

Are video streams available off-campus?

Yes, video streams are available to anyone on the Internet.

How can I make my video available on the web?

Videotapes or files are encoded by Video Services and uploaded to the streaming server.  Most formats of video, e.g. VHS and DV, can be encoded.  A web link which gives access to the video is usually emailed to the user. This link can be added to web pages, and e-mails.  Time requirements are determined on a case by case basis.

What type of video can be streamed?

Any type of video can be encoded and streamed subject to normal copyright considerations. Some material requires written clearance from the rights holder, e.g. commercially produced film or video from training packages.

What about accessible video?

The Office of Disability Services will provide any reasonable academic accommodation that a student needs due to his or her disability. Non-academic accommodations must meet the same standards regarding documentation as academic accommodations. Academic accommodations for each student are determined by the Disability Services Coordinator on an individual basis with input from qualified professionals.
